1st Place – Evalynn J. Alu – “Turbulent Flow”
Evalynn J. Alu was born and raised in Los Angeles. She received her degree in art at California State University, Fullerton in 1982. Having gone through a long representational period she gradually discovered a need and fascination with objective abstract form mostly derived from the universal forces that are forever present. Experimentation with her pallet as well as with her application soon became her focal point. Gradually layering paint using many techniques associated with watercolor and oil painting allowed Evalynn to create her feelings and moods present at the time. Experimentation and very seldom using a brush led her to achieve rewarding results. Her hope is that her work will allow viewers to discover for themselves what their own mood or lifestyle pulls from each piece.
Her artwork has been exhibited in numerous solo and juried exhibitions. She has won competitions at both local and international levels.
Evalynn states, “Perfecting ones technique while experimenting is always a part of my work. Creating movement filled with the emotion of the moment becomes an intriguing experiment for me. 2nd Place – David Pollard – “Postcard from Nova Scotia”
David is an amateur photographer residing in Ottawa, Canada. While now retired, he has been an Officer in the Canadian Navy, a landscape architect, an urban planner, and a federal public servant.
While photography was frequently necessary for David’s work it was also his off and on hobby for over fifty years. Over that time David tried various art forms, largely without success. With the advent of digital photography, however, he had finally found his medium.
While largely self-taught, David has taken courses at The School of Photographic Arts: Ottawa (SPAO) and attended workshops with Canadian photographers Garry Black and Ethan Meleg to further develop his photographic and post processing skills.
David’s photographic interests are varied, ranging from landscape, to abstract, to infrared and to anything else that catches his fancy. For him, the image coming out of the camera is just the starting point in creating a work of art. David has won several awards in the annual Ottawa-Outaouais Interclub Photo Competition, including one “Best in Show”; he has had photos published in Photoshop User magazine, in PHOTONews magazine, in Stark-Magazine “e-zine”, and in the Photofocus “blogazine”. http://davidpollard.prosite.com
3rd Place – Peter Alessandria – “Portland Head Rocks”
Peter Alessandria was born and raised in New York City and Long Island. After attending law school, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an attorney in the entertainment industry. Today he is a commercial and fine art photographer based in New Jersey.
As a fine art photographer, Peter has created numerous collections of landscape, seascape, cityscape and still-life images. Over the past few years, he has had eleven (11) solo exhibitions of his work, and has been featured in numerous group art shows and exhibitions. His photos have garnered popular and critical acclaim – he has won seven (7) awards for his fine art photos in the past three years. He has been a Featured Artist on the Artsy Shark newsfeed and his work has been the subject of several newspaper, radio and television interviews.
As a photographer and videographer Peter’s intent is simple: create compelling images that appeal to his own sense of beauty and aesthetics. If others appreciate his work, that’s great. But he has learned to create primarily for himself and allow the work to attract those who are in alignment with it.
Today Peter identifies as an artist. His photos are his own unique interpretation of reality. The digital file from his camera is a jumping off point; it is the gateway for him to embark on his own unique take on the world.

4th Place – Daniel Burroughs – “Seen Better Days”
Dan Burroughs paints in oil. He is currently challenged to capture light on landscapes featuring predominantly man-made modes of transportation, especially boats.
He was inspired by his teachers at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia where he also studied sculpture. For the next five years, he produced large welded metal sculptures in his studio in Jim Thorpe, PA.
Dan returned to painting after an engineering career, during which he won multiple awards as a designer of innovative bridges, found both in the United States and internationally. He served on the national Transportation Research Board Committee on Bridge Aesthetics and presented papers on this topic at national bridge conferences.
Since retiring to Whidbey Island in Puget Sound, where he spent summers as a child, Dan has become a member of the Whidbey Art Gallery, www.whidbeyartists.com. 5th Place – Michael Schertz – “Quiet Coast”
Having traveled in a variety of ways in many of the most remote and rugged places in this country, Michael now lives in the shadow of Mt. Rainier National Park. He can regularly be found in other parks throughout the west, parks like Yellowstone, Glacier, Olympic, Zion, North Cascades, Arches and more recently the Redwoods round out a few favorites.
The natural world around us is so amazing, there are places that not only on his list to visit but explore, off the beaten path. Primarily a self-made and evolving photographer of the natural world he seeks to find the moment when the light brings out that unique beauty and perspective. For each shoot and the images captured, there are countless hours spent in planning, traveling and exploring off that path. Utilizing a variety of transportation methods to find that special shot, whether snowshoeing in 20 feet of snow, sleeping in igloos high in the mountains, rappelling into a slot canyon, hiking along one of the most rugged coastlines of boulders, sand and gravel in the United States or gliding over pristine lakes by kayak.

6th Place – Jackie Johnston – “Beach Walker”
Jackie Johnston lives and creates her art in California. Jackie describes herself as “I am a geeky web developer with a background in photojournalism. I spent most of my life thinking I was not able to draw or paint. But during the summer of 2011, I bought a set of pastels and started playing with them.”
Jackie was encouraged by her results and that fall she took a painting class at her local community college. Since then, it’s been a pursuit that she has too little time for, but really enjoys.

7th Place – Winston Rockwell – “Misty Shore”
Winston has been involved in amateur and semi-professional photography since the early 1980’s. His images have appeared in newspapers, magazines, a calendar published by a local botanical garden, and as motivational posters for a college in Northern Ireland. In 2006, he was honored to have one of his photos printed in National Geographic Magazine.
Winston is a lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, and currently lives in the heart of the Puget Sound region of Washington. The Northwest is rich with opportunities (in spite of the gloomy, rainy winters), and offers an outdoor photographer a wide variety of environments.
Winston prefers to photograph natural subjects such as landscapes, flowers, birds, and animals. He finds the beauty and variety of nature far more appealing than man-made subjects, and love to spend his free time capturing that beauty in his images. http://www.northwestnaturalimagery.com
8th Place – Katrina Case-Soper – “Stillness”
Katrina Case started painting when she was 7 years old on her grandparent’s dairy farm in northern Wisconsin. After the cows were milked she would run down to the creek in the valley and paint dreaming of life as a great artist. From a family of Doctors, Pharmacists and Nurses, she was encouraged to choose something practical, something guaranteed. Katrina graduated Cum Laude from Andrews University in 2005 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts, with an emphasis in painting.
After college she worked as a residential mural artist until the economy in Michigan took a turn. She was forced to take what her parents referred to as, “a real job.” Ms. Case went back to school and earned an Applied Science degree in Radiography, working as a teacher at community college teaching anatomy and physiology. Still clinging to her passion for painting Katrina used her art skills in the class room, drawing study guides for her students of the different body parts. Art was still her joy even as she settled down to do what normal people do.
After a few twists and turns Katrina is back to painting full time. She was a featured artist at ArtPrize 2014 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is currently featured in a Gallery and several restaurants in beautiful Old San Juan Puerto Rico. In June she became the official artist of Fort San Geronimo in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Katrina’s work has been shipped to clients from St. Barths to London.
Katrina’s work has also recently been accepted on ArtFinder.com. A site that brings her work to a fully global audience. Katrina is a featured artist in the Red Flannel Art Festival here in Michigan as well as for the Northern Traditions fund raiser at Jay’s Sporting Goods where she signed over 800 artist prints for a line that extended out to the parking lot.
Her eye for detail, color and balance reflects her respect and love of nature. Her journey to becoming a master artist has led her to falling in love with plein aire painting or as Katrina likes to call it Adventure Painting. Strapping large canvases to her backpack with paints, easel, note book and supplies. Leaving the safety her studio behind, hiking into the wilds to paint landscapes from the Great Northern Plains to the Caribbean Katrina seeks to find new vistas to embrace. 9th Place – Victoria Gadson – “Oceans”
Victoria Gadson’s love of nature is evident in her work. Her landscape paintings reflect a reverence for the natural world, capturing its beauty and awe-inspiring majesty.
When Victoria is not in the studio working on a painting, she spends time out in nature, looking for inspiration. About her work, she says, “I don’t always paint exactly what I see in nature on the canvas. It is not about creating an exact replica of the natural world, it is about creating an experience and the feeling that what you are seeing is a piece of a much larger world. I want to convey the sense that nature is timeless.”
Victoria continues her thoughts, “Color is important when working on a landscape, because the way we see color in nature does not always translate well to a painted surface. There is a need to strike a balance between staying true to nature and finding a way to make the painting believable and able to stand on its own.”

1oth Place – Laura Kucharyson – “Beach Day”
My name is Laura Kucharyson, and from the time I can remember, everything around me was a potential art piece. There was always an art project in progress, from using my dad’s socks, to making my sisters’ Ken doll clothes, to forming tiny pieces of paper into picture books, to mud being formed into candle holders. At 12 years old, I was introduced to the world of oil painting under the instruction of an amazing Colorado artist, Evelyn Adams. Her attention to detail and mastery of mixing colors remained with me even after my 22 year career choice as a music teacher. My husband and I raised 3 boys hiking and camping in the beautiful Rocky Mountains and enjoying the golden aspens in the autumn and the snowy wonderlands of the Colorado winters. These experiences have inspired many of the paintings in my collection. In 2006, my family moved to Florida, encouraged by several family members who have lived here for several years, and the ocean has overtaken my imagination. I simply cannot get enough of God’s ocean landscape.
I was humbled; witnessing the artistic talent displayed at the Art Gallery of Viera, where I began my new adventure as an artist, entering one of my pieces, Aspen Grove, in the Brush with Success in October of 2012. Under the instruction of Robert LeBron, a world-renowned knife painter, and the encouragement of many new artist friends around me, I was given the privilege of becoming a member of the gallery at the end of January 2013. One is never too old to learn and grow as an artist, and my plan is to continue learning artists such as Meiki Aton, an accomplished acrylic painter in the Melbourne area, and Damien Share who has many of his paintings hanging throughout the Brevard area, and Slone Keats, another gifted knife painter.
Presently, I have several paintings displayed at the Brevard Workforce, Holmes Regional Center and the Space Coast Cancer Center. I have had pieces shared in the Indian River Gallery in Cocoa and am a member of the Brevard Cultural Alliance and the Strawbridge Art League and Titusville Art League. “First Light” won the Gold award in the 2014 Vision hosted by Strawbridge Art League, and Best of show at the Titusville art show 2015. My painting “Hawaiian Paradise” won the Merit award in Brush with Success 2014. My oil painting “Born Again” will be featured as the cover of the Senior Life magazine for Aril 2015.
My prayer is that this adventure never ends, and I will continue the learning process. I’m looking forward to the many more creations to discover. http://kucharysonart.com
