1st Place – Judith Brandon – “Take it All”
Judith Brandon is an artist who lives and creates in Cleveland, Ohio with a primary focus in mixed media on paper. She focuses on techniques and materials, whereby she will investigate the dynamics of weather and landscape, including the emotional effect of the limits of our ability to cope with catastrophe.
Judith explains her artistic process, “Rather than presenting a factual reality, I fabricate an illusion to conjure the realms of our imagination. Each piece has a story and an emotion within it. Through thoughtful crafting and layering, the pieces reveal themselves as tornadoes, ocean swells, light pillars and storms. By exploring the concept of landscape in an emotional way, I try to heighten the dynamic between the audience and myself. Like nature, emotion is mutable. The most important element I work with is emotion – it drives my vision. Suspending a breaking wave is like trying to describe happiness or grief—there are no defining edges, you just ride through it.”
Judith graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1987. Her work has been exhibited in many national juried exhibitions and included in several international publications. In 2013, she had a piece exhibited in the National Weather Biennale in Norman, OK, and she also had two solo exhibitions: one at Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA, and the other at Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery in Cleveland.

2nd Place – Cortez Austin – “Flying with Waves”
Cortez Austin began his career in photography 38 years ago. He is at present a digital photographer specializing in Nature photography. He also frequently photographs musicians and people he encounters in his travels to all corners of the globe.
Cortez has written articles for and/or had photographs published by some of the most prestigious magazines and book publishing companies such as National Geographic, WildBird, Birder’s World, National Audubon and the Nature conservancy. He also taught nature photography part-time as a part of the upper school two dimensional art program at St. Albans School in Washington, D.C. for 23 years.
Cortez feels that, as much knowledge as you may accumulate in photography the best photographers will always be students of the craft. Regarding his quest for photographs he states… “I make many sacrifices of money, comfort and safety to get to where I want to photograph. Once I get there I struggle to see things a new way, to get beyond the standard photograph. 3rd Place – David Henderson – “Coming About”
David Henderson graduated from Boston University in 1976 with a degree in painting. Dave is a lifelong native of New Jersey, and after more than twenty five years as an illustrator, he has now moved into the world of fine art, bringing with him all the speed, skill, and inventiveness he learned over three decades as a commercial painter in New York.
Dave states this about his art, ”Even as a commercial illustrator I was always a painter and now at this point in my life, to create paintings for their own sake, it feels like I am coming home.”
He continues his thoughts on his artistic process “My camera is my notebook. I gather and process scenes, then with multiple photos as reference, I direct paint the work in a very traditional way, as painting has been done for hundreds of years.” His website is www.dfhendersonfineart.com
4th Place – Alexandra Leadbeater – “Wave II”
Working as a painter and printmaker, Alexandra has been making and exhibiting work since the Serpentine Summer Show in London in 1981, which launched her artistic career. She has since exhibited in public and private galleries in the UK and was selected for artist residences in Brazil, Lithuania and at The Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida.
Originally from Cheshire in the north of England, she completed a Foundation Course at Bath Academy of Art in Corsham, followed by a BA (Honors) degree in Fine Art in Lancaster.
Now living near the coast by the English Channel, Alexandra makes paintings and prints inspired by the ocean, from the frothy sea’s edge to the distant horizon as well as depicting birds and simple everyday domestic objects such as rusty enamel jugs and garden tools which are usually painted life-size.
Alexandra states the following about her creative process, “Working with energy like the sea itself, the nearest wave as it crashes or simply washes on the shore is an endless fascination as colour and form exist for a unique moment. Paint is applied by brushing, dripping or spraying allowing the paint itself to take the form of a wave, rather than depicting the sea in paint. Sometimes the marks gather together in a crest, or seem to float like flotsam, across the surface. Often painted on wood panels, the marks and patterns in the timber echo the lines of the tide or striations in the sky.”
She continues her thoughts, “Waves constantly change in their journey to reach the shore. Each one is individual but is connected to the rest. Many waves, one ocean, all part of an ebb and flow, mirroring life itself.” Her website is http://www.alexleadbeater.com
5th Place – Danielle Austen – “Fuse”
Danielle Austen is a documentary fine art photographer specializing in intimate portraits of the environment. She was trained in the traditional fine arts of painting, sculpture, drawing and photography where she received her BFA from Cornell University. She worked as a graphic designer for seven years before attending the master’s program at the Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, in photojournalism.
Working for newspapers and magazines, her editorial work has been published locally, regionally and nationally including Life Magazine’s 2002 “The Year in Pictures.” Returning to her fine art roots, she has combined her skills and training and has participated in over three dozen national juried exhibits, a joint show at the Atrium Gallery in Morristown, NJ, a solo exhibit, “Portraits of the Glades” at the Ernest Coe Visitor Center Gallery at the Everglades National Park in March 2014, and her series of the “Kenai Peaks” of Alaska are on exhibit as part of Art Around the Park in Morristown, NJ from June 27- Nov 21, 2014. In the past two years she was an Artist-in-Residence at the Everglades National Park, the Vermont Studio Center where she received a full Fellowship and most recently at Acadia National Park.
She has won many awards, both in her photojournalism work and fine art work. This past year Danielle was a national winner of Canon’s “Project Imaginat10n” photo competition with Director Ron Howard. Celebrity director, Biz Stone, the co-founder of Twitter, chose her winning image to help inspire his short film, “Evermore” which premiered October 2013 in NYC.
Danielle describes her creative process, “As a documentary fine artist trained both in photojournalism and in the fine arts, I am bound to seek honesty in my subjects and to communicate the spirituality of the moment. My work focuses on unexpected views of the landscape… and to tell their story. I search for what many may see as ordinary and discover the extraordinary.”
Danielle continues her thoughts, “Over the years, I have found beauty in many unforeseen places. I am constantly surprised at the ability of nature to create amazingly beautiful abstract imagery through the interplay of light, pattern, color, and movement. The effects can be surreal, and even ethereal. I believe these images are pathways into the unexpected depth of the natural world, a world I work to document.” http://danielleausten.com
6th Place – David Patterson – “Beach Walkers”
David Patterson is an artist living and working in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. David is a very diverse artist, creating soft pastel paintings, digital photography, and colorful glass sculptures. Most of David’s pastel work leans towards Realism, and usually conveys an image of calmness or wonder. Though each painting, glass work, or photograph, has a special meaning to David, he wants the viewer to walk away with their own emotions from the work – in this way they also become part of the creative process.
David obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Washington State University in 1976, where he specialized in graphic design and photography. 7th Place – Loren Squier – “Wave and Sun”
Loren Squier, is a 31 year old artist who lives and creates in Florida. Loren has been painting for six years, has a BA degree from Florida Atlantic University and art has been his passion and his main focus in life.
Loren explains his creative process, “I use spray paint for the main figures in the paintings (free-hand and stencil work), which are just about always on stretched canvas. My backgrounds are acrylic wash or spray paint, sometimes both and paint markers for text, outlines, and just marks when needed. I have four major influences that can be seen clearly when viewing my art. They are the ocean, comic books, Japanese wood block prints, and all the beautiful graffiti all over the world.”
Loren continues, “The last thing I would like to say is thank you for looking at my work and (paraphrasing Banksy in Exit Through the Gift Shop) “I don’t think….played by the rules in some ways; but, then there aren’t supposed to be any rules. 8th Place – Fran McNeely – “Little Creek Cove”
Abstract painter Fran McNeely lives and paints in Tucson, Arizona. Self-taught, she enhances her work through specific classes and workshops both locally and nationally. Fran works out of her studio—Peace of Paper Studio in Tucson, Arizona. Her website is www.peace-of-paper.net.
Fran’s paintings are energetic and playful; feelings present at their creation which she hopes will be conveyed to the viewer through her choice of colors and design. Each painting has been achieved via a unique experience which results in a unique creation.

9th Place – Carmel Brantley – “View from Above”
Inspired by light, texture, and form, Carmel Brantley’s photographs are modern expressions of depth and detail. Carmel is drawn to subject matter that is complex, yet contains a subtle, simple beauty. Her work ranges from the classic, rich tones of sepia, to bold, contemporary black and white, and now, intense, saturated color images.

10th Place – Kathleen Wong – “Wave”
Kathleen is artist whose main work is in graphic design. In the late eighties, she studied art and design in Hong Kong. Presently, she now does most of her design work with a computer due to her job requirements.
Kathleen describes her artist journey, “Starting in 2013. I realized that I must spend more time to continue my childhood dream of being a full-time artist. As a self-taught artist, I paint mostly in oils, pencils, watercolours and pastels. Presently, my preferred media is oil on canvas, it allows me to play with unlimited colors, layers and different textures, also convey emotion and story.
She continues her thoughts, “My creative fusion painting can show the pain, joy, anger, happy, beauty, ugliness and more nature things which is represented all my memory and passion in my life. Living in a stressful environment, arts give me a way to relax, it make me like a bird, totally freedom to fly in the wind. Except canvas, I will use some discarded materials, such as glass bottles, wood, stone, metal, etc., hoping to spread the green message.”
