1st Place – Lynne Davies – “Shaun”
Lynne Davies is a self-taught artist from Portsmouth, Hampshire UK. At the age of 5, after winning a packet of felt tip pens in an art competition and completing her first commissioned portrait at twelve years old, she knew she was put on this world to paint and from that point in time, she has never looked back. Lynne managed to achieve her dream of becoming professional in 2009.
Over the years her style has developed and improved and is inspired by nature, travel, (in particularly the colors and textures of Rome), wildlife, romance, classical art and music, she is a passionate painter of beautiful, expressive, large, (increasingly more abstract) images. Her favorite medium is Acrylic on canvas. She has exhibited extensively and was a finalist in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year Competition. www.lynnedavies.com
2nd Place – Alexandre Felix – “Franz Josef”
Alexandre Felix, is a young art director from France. His years of studying and working in the advertising business gave him the opportunity to meet many professionals in the field as well as being introduced to many exciting photographers and artists. The reflex which he “played” since 2008 has become his tools. While completing his advertising book, he perfected his technique and his equipment evolves.
Alexandre loves to travel and during his last trip to New Zealand, he and his backpack went to the heart of nature to shoot landscapes at its best profile. www.alexfelix.fr
3rd Place – Walter Weaver – “Blue Heron”
Walter Weaver lives and creates in Florida. He is a 1970 Graduate from Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida. His favorite medium for his paintings are acrylic on canvas.
Walter states this about his art, “The water, ocean, nature, southwest culture and native Americans have all been my teachers. All of my paintings are spiritual in nature and I like to immerse myself in the subject and then return to the studio to paint the inner experience. For me each painting is a blessing that I receive from the Divine, in a language made out of infinite living shapes, patterns, symbols, and colors, which goes beyond our words as a form of communication.” http://artkiva.com
4th Place – Christopher Dotson – “School of Mostly Red Fish”
Christopher Dotson lives in Charleston, SC and the inspiration for most of his work is nature. He is particularly interested in the spiritual meaning of nature. Chris states this about his art “In reducing the complexity of natural forms, and recreating them I can gain a better understanding of their meaning. I exclude details that are irrelevant or distracting. In my most recent work I have been focusing on simple natural forms, such as fish. I purposely leave out details such as side and dorsal fins, or markings because I do not want the type of fish to have influence to the overall meaning of the work. I want the fish to be seen as natural forms primarily. They are given meaning by their behavior, for example as a school of fish.”
Christopher works and creates primarily in oil paints, which to him, is among the most versatile materials. He has no specific technique in my mind when working on a painting. http://www.dotsonart.com
5th Place – Cody VandeZande – “Raven”
Cody VandeZande grew up in the small town of Waupun, Wisconsin. When he finished high school in 2005, he went to school for cosmetology and studied to become a hairstylist. He has always loved art and by entering cosmetology he decided that he could still be creative and express himself through the styling of hair.
Cody describes his creative journey, “After a several years, I was inspired to pick up my paint brush and I started to paint again. I started to bring some of my finished paintings into the hair salon where I worked in order to show my fellow stylists and some of my clients what I did in my free time. I was told by many people that I needed to continue my love for art in a big city, where the chances of succeeding are much higher than small town USA. http://www.codyvandezande.com
6th Place – Lyndsey Warren – “Where She Walks”
Lyndsey Warren is a photographer, digital artist/illustrator, and fine artist. She loves all forms of the creative process including; art, photography, poetry, music, moments, and more. She has a BFA from the Hartford Art School and a Masters from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Lyndsey states this about her art, “I enjoy creating in traditional mediums and materials as well as with digital mediums. I recently started experimenting with merging my digital art skills with my photography and tradition media explorations to create one of a kind digital mixed media pieces or photo based mixed media pieces.”
She goes on further to explain, “Although I am not cultivating a trademark style, my body of artworks, whether they are fine art, digital mixed media, or photographs are recognizable as my works of art. As I continue to evolve as an artist, I see my work becoming more expressive, more refined, and more joyfully involved in exploring the ways to create a connection with my viewers that leaves them breathless.” http://www.shadowhorsestudios.com
7th Place – Dennis Sabo – “Boulder Dash”
Dennis Sabo is an internationally award winning photographer specializing in contemporary fine art abstract, landscape, and seascape photography. His fine art prints interweave his creative compositional expressions and vivid colors into nature’s greater scheme of things. Dennis has refined the photograph into an interpretive collage of colors, and texture.
Dennis states about his photography, “When I capture an image it is my hope that it evokes an emotional experience for the viewer. Perhaps it is how the subject is bathed in light, perhaps it is the lines of the subject that draws you in, or simply it is an image that you enjoy viewing. 8th Place – Neena Singh – “Bliss I”
Neena Singh is a self-taught artist from India. Her idea of the artist resonates with the Aristotelian concept of the artist and that of John Pollock in that “each painter paints himself.” Neena’s paintings are charged with a positive energy and express certain serenity. She subtly plays with tonal gradations and shades of light. Her paintings touch the deepest core of the viewer with their sublimity.
Neena states this about her work, “For me, painting is an attempt to get a glimpse of that which sees me. Gradually, I have learned to surrender to the Process and to let the Presence emerge. The process of painting creates a twilight zone which bridges the gap between what is visible and what lies beyond the obvious and in between, these two zones infinite possibilities exist and it is in that space where art happens to me. 9th Place – Christa Gast – “Awakening”
Christa Gast graduated from Ashland University, OH with a BFA in August 2011. While attending AU she studied in studio art with a concentration and major in painting. Her artworks create a journey of escapism which focuses on highly detailed moments captured in the natural realm. Christa says this about here art, “In this realm, there exists a place where I’m able to find a moment where I can feel a connection back to nature. I wish to show the moments in time when humanity and nature are re- connected. I want to capture the light, the color, and the organic forms. My works act like fleeting snapshots of the mind and memory from actual experiences in my life. I want people to be able to witness personal experiences that I’ve found in the natural world. I love experimenting with new media and have recently started using ink and graphite in my latest series of work.” cgast1@ashland.edu
10th Place – Paul Hein – “Grand Canyon”
Paul Hein is a cartographer by trade, where he has devoted over 30 years to creating maps and images that display a visual clarity and effectiveness of design.
Today, his images are computer generated digital elevation models of existing topography. In other words, they are maps of the earth’s terrain, but without any of the place names, roads, boundary lines, etc. that are normally associated with a traditional map. Paul has used these elevation models to create abstract works of art while maintaining the geographic integrity of the data.
By applying shaded relief to the models and by carefully assigning an abstract color palette to various elevations, he presents our planet from a uniquely technical, yet artistic perspective. www.facebook.com/Topographics
